Joey Sharpe

Kettering Athletic Scholarship Award

Joey was a 9 year old boy from Kettering who lost his life February 19, 2007 while playing in his backyard. Joey was a 4th grader at JFK elementary school. In the early days following Joey’s accident it became apparent that the outpouring of the community was going to be significant and continues to this day. As a result, the Joey Sharpe Kettering Athletic Scholarship Fund through John F. Kennedy Elementary School was created. Each year this fund will give an award to a Kettering Fairmont senior scholar athlete who best exemplifies Joey’s big heart qualities. A heart shaped crystal represents Joey’s big heart qualities and will accompany the cash award. We are very proud to keep Joey’s memory alive with this award.

Joey thrived on sports and was a member of the select Kettering Basketball Club 3rd & 4th grade Firebirds as a point guard where he was a Metro Tournament champion. Joey was a member of the select South Dayton Sting Baseball Club as a 2nd baseman where he was a Midwest Ohio League champion. Joey also played football at FKAL, soccer and anywhere else there was a game. Joey had a big motor and never wanted to stop playing what ever the game was. Joey was much more than just a boy who loved sports. Joey loved school and understood how important it was work hard in the classroom. Joey respected everyone he came in contact with and never complained about anything. Joey had a never quit attitude and was a true team player. He would take any position, job etc. you gave him and do it the best of his ability. Joey was a great kid who was always smiling.

The Kettering Future Firebirds have organized the second annual Joey Sharpe Memorial basketball tournament to be held on March 13th, 14th and 15th at Fairmont High School. All proceeds will go to two scholarships set up in Joey’s honor. The first is set up through JFK Elementary as the Joey Sharpe Kettering Athletic Scholarship. The second is set up through the Future Firebirds to help a youth play select basketball when the family cannot afford the fees. Both of these are great ways to help young athletes achieve their goals.
